What are carriage Bolts?
Carriage bolts, also called coach bolts, which is a bolt with round head square neck used to fasten metal to wood and resist rotating when the nut is tightened and removed.
There are many different types of carriage bolts, like cup head square neck bolts, mushroom head square neck bolts, round head square neck bolts, round head short neck bolts, flat head square neck bolts, etc.
Where do they used in different applications?
Carriage bolts are good for metal to wood like through metal strengthening plates on either side of wooden beam, the squared section fitting into a square hole in the metalwork to give enough grip to prevent rotation. Or for wood-to-wood connections like construction of docks, swing sets and decks as well as other surfaces where a smooth finish is needed, when the head may not be accessible for tightening.
Also, carriage bolts are extensively used for security fixings, such as locks and hinges, where the bolt must only be removable from one side. The smooth domed head and square nut below prevent the carriage bolt from being unlocked from the insecure side.
Carriage bolts also similar to coach screws or lag bolts, which are square or hex head screw with a tapered woodscrew thread.
